Fallout: New Vegas - Lost companion?

Hmm...iv played new vegas a ton and iv lost alot of companions in the wastes. Normally tho they are just standing around after i told them to stay put. But if he isnt showing up on the world map have you tried the local map? Sometimes the marker will show up there.
